HB156 passes both chambers, signed by Governor

Alabama House Bill 156 (HB156) of the 2026 Regular Session establishes the Physician Assistant (PA) Licensure Compact in Alabama. This legislation, sponsored by Rep. Paul Lee, allows Alabama to join an interstate compact to standardize licensing requirements, streamline the licensing process, and allow PAs with compact privileges to practice in Alabama.

Key Aspects of HB156 (2026 Session):

  • Interstate Compact: It adopts the PA Licensure Compact, facilitating license portability and expanding access to care.

  • Status: As of March 10, 2026, the bill has passed both chambers and is in the enrollment phase (signature requested).

  • Purpose: The goal is to reduce barriers for licensed PAs relocating to or practicing in Alabama.

For more information on the compact and how it affects PAs in Alabama, visit AAPA's licensure compact page here.
